DKW Munga 4

While the VW Microbus was the first car I bought, the DKW Munga (Mehrzweck-Universal-Geländewagen mit Allradantrieb) 4 was the first car I owned - at least co-owned with my three brothers. It was given to me and my younger brothers by my father's father because it didn't work. Instead of jumping around on it and wrecking it completely, we managed to make it work again and had a fun toy for years! After this specimen finally died, we exchanged it for another one which is still in the family, and proof is shown with the photos on this page. Today it is proud owner of an "H" license, which means "Historical" because it is more than 30 years old, but it works just the same as this type of car always did.

The DKW Munga was - in the 1950s - the German Army's equivalent to the Jeep. It requires a lot of maintenance, like all cars did at that time. But it is extremely reliable and will take you anywhere in Germany, road or no road. Our Munga 4 takes 4 people, there was also a Munga 6 for 6 and a Munga 8 for (surprise?) 8 people. The Army Munga 4 is fitted with a rifle holder to take 3 army rifles - apparently the driver did not take a rifle to work.
